Meet Shaun Conary
My name is Shaun Conary, and I’m 41 years old, living in Belfast, Maine, the community I grew up in and have called home for much of my life. I was born in Groton, Connecticut, and because I grew up in a military family, I experienced different places and environments when I was young. Belfast, however, became home, and I graduated from Belfast Area High School in 2004.
I’ve been working since I was about 15 years old, and over the years I’ve built a work history that has taught me the importance of showing up, working hard, treating people with respect, and taking pride in doing a job right.
Some of my earliest jobs were in the restaurant industry, including working as a dishwasher at Silva Cafe and Jasper’s Seafood. I later worked at Foster’s Family Pet Store, where my responsibilities included customer service, running the register, cleaning, and helping with the everyday operation of the store.
One of the biggest chapters of my working life was at Renys Department Store, where I spent approximately 10 years. During that time, I worked in several different areas, including stocking, customer service, register work, maintenance, and eventually supervisory responsibilities. That experience taught me a lot about reliability, working with the public, paying attention to details, and being someone others could depend on.
After Renys, I worked at athenahealth from 2016 to 2018 in the mailroom before moving on to Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, where I have worked for nine years. At the shipyard, I’ve worked primarily in painting, detailing, cleaning, and maintaining boats. Working around high-quality vessels has strengthened my attention to detail and taught me how much of a difference proper cleaning, preparation, and care can make.
My background also includes military service. I served in the U.S. Army and later spent five years with the Army National Guard in Belfast, reaching the rank of E-4 and working with heavy machinery. The military reinforced values that have stayed with me throughout my life: discipline, responsibility, teamwork, persistence, and getting the job done.
Outside of my employment history, I’m also an Eagle Scout and am CPR certified. I spent time working with young people as a YMCA teen counselor in Ellsworth as well. Looking back, my life has involved a little bit of everything—customer service, restaurants, retail, maintenance, cleaning, military service, heavy equipment, boats, and hands-on work.
All of those experiences eventually helped lead me toward building something of my own.
Conary’s Spick & Span
I started Conary’s Spick & Span with a simple idea: provide dependable, professional cleaning services to people and businesses in downtown Belfast, Maine only — inside the Route 1 bypass — while building a local business I can be proud to put my name on.
For me, this isn’t about becoming a huge company overnight. It’s about building a strong reputation one customer and one job at a time.
I understand that when someone hires a local business, they’re trusting me with their home, storefront, restaurant, or boat. I don’t take that lightly. Whether I’m washing storefront windows in Downtown Belfast, cleaning a boat, pressure washing a deck, or handling another cleaning job, I want the finished work to show that I cared about the details.
Belfast isn’t just another service area on a map to me. It’s my community. I grew up here, graduated here, served with the local National Guard unit, have spent years working here, and now I’m building my own business here.
After more than 25 years in the workforce, I’ve learned that a good reputation isn’t created by a slogan. It comes from being dependable, treating people well, doing what you say you’re going to do, and putting real effort into your work.
That’s the kind of reputation I want Conary’s Spick & Span to have.
